Christmas Spirit Flo(w)

Best Day Ever Handmade by a child OrnamentHurricane Flo may have hit our area hard but it did not crush our Christmas spirit. Hurricane Florence wreaked havoc in our area September 2018. Our Boys and Girls Homes residential campus, as well as many of our licensed foster homes, were affected by this massive storm system that flooded our communities. Many people were left without power for days and homes were flooded. However, this natural disaster did not keep us down for long. In the days immediately following this storm, people came together to help support the communities devastated.

We were worried what kind of impact this may have on our children in our foster care program for Christmas. Many families were still trying to rebuild what was lost by the storm.

To our surprise, Boys and Girl Homes’ Community Based Services have had more sponsors to come forth this year to pick up Christmas wish lists for the children in our program than ever before. Doctors’ offices, wellness centers, church groups, industrial businesses, and single individuals have all come forth asking for more lists they could take to sponsor a child for Christmas. Our Lake Waccamaw, Fayetteville, Kinston, and Raleigh offices have been filled with presents provided by our generous “Santa’s elves”.

Children this year still received items on their wish lists such as bikes, tablets, game systems, baby dolls, remote control cars/trucks, books, puzzles, coats, hats, etc…

Even though all of our foster home children were sponsored by early December we still had people call our agency to find out how they could help after seeing others stepping in to help. In the words of one of our sponsors, “we enjoyed shopping for our child so much!”

All of our foster care consultants acted as “Santa’s little helpers” to get all the gifts distributed to our foster parents before Christmas. There is no doubt that the children in our foster care program had smiling faces on Christmas morning thanks to our awesome sponsors, foster parents, and foster care consultants.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the staff of Community Based Services!
