Voices for Children Breakfast LogoI was recently privileged to attend a “Voices for Children” breakfast hosted by NC Child. Boys and Girls Homes is a strong advocate of the work and mission of NC Child so we were invited to honor the work of some of the state’s most dedicated childcare advocates.

The Breakfast honored Ms. Karen McLeod, who for over 20 years has led the charge for children and their families by tirelessly advocating for reform of our state’s human services, child welfare, mental health and juvenile justice systems.

They also honored SaySo (Strong Able Youth Speaking Out). SaySo is an association of young people ages 14 to 24, who have been in foster care and speak the truth about policy to state lawmakers and community leaders. Their goal is to create a stronger foster care system for themselves and those who will follow them.

Besides being in awe of these two honorees, I was struck by the gathering and power of state leaders, child care professionals and ordinary citizens, all of whom are working to make children’s lives better. I am sure there were 100 more people who could have been honored at that breakfast. It is a testament to the remarkable power of the human spirit that over 700 people gathered to fight for, advocate for, and provide the best human services possible for the most vulnerable of our population – abused, abandoned and neglected children!

At Boys and Girls Homes we fight for children everyday just like our many child welfare partners. Thank you for supporting Boys and Girls Homes and giving us the honor of caring for the children of North Carolina.

Mike Garrell is the Director of Development for Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina.
