Ignitia providing a key to success at thomas academy

Lake Waccamaw, NC – Each day, students at Thomas Academy walk into the computer lab to work on their courses through the Ignitia on-line learning program.

Funded through grant support from International Paper Company and Foundation and the Wilmington Woman’s Club, the Ignitia program has been used to complete more than 210 on-line courses. The courses are self-paced, allowing the students to move as quickly as they are capable of through the work.

“This is an opportunity for our students to play catch up,” said Dr. Geraldine Bradshaw, director at Thomas Academy. “This is especially important for students who arrive in our school one to two years behind their peers. When they realize that they have the opportunity to catch up to their friends, they take off like 747 jets.”

Many of the students have taken three to six recovery classes in the year and a half that the program has been available to them.

“We are able to provide more than 75 courses through Ignitia,” Bradshaw said. “These courses range from AP-Calculus to Business Law to Engineer & Design to Manufacturing Processes. There are also all the history, math and science classes our students could need.”

Some students have completed up to four courses through Ignitia in the same time frame that a traditional setting would cover one course. The effort has been so successful that a full-time lab administrator is present to guide the students through the process and manage the courses available to the students.

“We have never been able to help so many of our students in such a direct and tangible way,” Bradshaw said. “I have spoken to student after student who told me how much this has helped them get back to where they needed to be and how happy they are with their progress.

“One of those students came to us expecting to have to do an extra year of high school,” she continued. “Instead, thanks to the Ignitia program, she will actually graduate early with the added benefit of a passion for learning that will allow for her to continue to succeed.”
