Thomas academy celebrates achievements during Awards Banquet

May 16, 2019

Lake Waccamaw, NC – More than 180 academic and athletic awards were presented during the 2019 Thomas Academy Awards Banquet held May 2 in the Fellowship Hall of the Leamon Rogers Memorial Chapel.

“This is an opportunity to celebrate our young ones,” said Dr. Geraldine Bradshaw, principal at Thomas Academy. “They have worked really hard this year on learning things, acquired a lot of skills, and we just all want to celebrate those accomplishments.”

Sponsored by the D.M. Campbell family of Elizabethtown, trophies, medals, plaques and certificates were presented for accomplishments in and out of the classroom throughout the year.

“About 35 years ago, Mr. Mac Campbell had an idea for this gathering,” said Dr. Tom Simmons, vice-president for education. “For the last 35 years, the Campbell family has been gracious enough to support us financially to do this. We truly appreciate what the Campbell family has done for us. Our relationship is one we hope will last for many more years to come.”

The evening ended with the three top awards being presented. Daysha McKoy received the Student Support Award for her hard work as an office assistant.

“The Principal’s Awards recognize the student in the middle school and the high school who exemplifies our commitments to connection, compassion, and character,” said Bradshaw. “These students work hard in the classroom, but also demonstrate leadership throughout all of their school activities.”

The middle school award was presented to Lorelei Hopkins with the high school award presented to Allissa Hatch.

Bradshaw had a special message for the students in attendance who did not receive awards.

“All children sitting here who have not received an award it does not mean that you are not exceptional,” said Bradshaw. “We recognize you, we see you, and we love you. You have an opportunity at the beginning of next school year to be one who is called to stand up here. It’s just a matter of putting in the effort and the work and we will recognize you.”
