B&GH joins the global #GivingTuesday Movement

November 2, 2018

Lake Waccamaw, NC – Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina has joined #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide.

“We joined the movement last year to help share the message of hope provided by the generous supporters in our community,” said B&GH President Gary Faircloth. “The need is greater than ever to provide care and safe homes for children who have been abused and neglected. The children we serve today are some of the most vulnerable and deserving. We are so grateful to the support provided by our community.”

This year’s B&GH #GivingTuesday campaign shares the story of a teenager who came into the care of B&GH after a revolving door of homes that were never the right fit.

“We change the identity in the story to protect the confidentiality of our children, but the heart of the story remains the same,” said Faircloth. “This child has experienced so much at such a young age, as have all of our children. Our goal is to provide the best care for the children throughout all of our services.”

Occurring this year on Nov. 27, #GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Building off the momentum of widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, this event is used to kick off the holiday giving season and to inspire people to collaborate in improving their local communities.

92Y – a cultural center in New York City that has been bringing people together around its core values of community service and giving back since 1874 – conceptualized #GivingTuesday as a new way of linking individuals and causes to strengthen communities and encourage giving. In 2017, the sixth year of #GivingTuesday, millions of people in 150 countries came together to give back and support the causes they believe in. Over $300 million was raised online to benefit a tremendously broad range of organizations. The efforts did not end with financial contributions as several campaigns focused on volunteer hours, donations of food and clothing, and acts of kindness.

“We have been incredibly inspired by the generosity in time, efforts and ideas that have brought our concept for a worldwide movement into reality,” said Henry Timms, founder of #GivingTuesday and executive director of 92Y. “As we embark on our seventh year of #GivingTuesday, we are encouraged by the early response from partners eager to continue making an impact in this global conversation.”

About #GivingTuesday

#GivingTuesday is a global giving movement that has been built by individuals, families, organizations, businesses and communities in all 50 states and in countries around the world. This year, #GivingTuesday falls on Nov. 27. #GivingTuesday harnesses the collective power of a unique blend of partners to transform how people think about, talk about, and participate in the giving season. It inspires people to take collective action to improve their communities, give back in better, smarter ways to the charities and causes they believe in, and help create a better world. #GivingTuesday demonstrates how every act of generosity counts, and that they mean even more when we give together.
