Planning Happiness

Planning documents spread out on the floorI love planning.

It is just so satisfying to me to sit down and put together a step-by-step plan including deadlines for each step to achieve a goal. I always feel so accomplished when I complete the planning process.

Yes, I know that is a bit weird.

For me, October is planning season. You have 12 weeks to complete your goals for the current year, which means there is some more planning and strategy to complete the sprint to year-end. You can evaluate what worked and what did not. And then you can begin planning for the next year in a strategic way.

This year, I get the added bonus of helping create the Boys and Girls Homes Strategic Long Range Plan for the next three years. (Again, I know this is an unusual process to enjoy.) This collaborate process is an opportunity to live out our Sanctuary® commitments to democracy, open communication, and growth and change. We are planning how to improve the way we deliver services and strategizing new ways to serve our core mission – providing services to children who have been abused or neglected.

Boys and Girls Homes is committed to finding a way to serve the children and families now before us. This means creating and implementing plans to continually improve the services we provide. And while we recreate the official Strategic Long Range Plan every three years, we create smaller plans and goals to support those efforts through our continuous quality improvement process. (And yes, I am involved in that too.)

So if you were to come by my office this time of year, you are likely to see me sitting on the floor surrounded by calendars, timelines, and planning documents with a smile on my face and an energy of excitement as I am in my happy planning space.

Melissa Hopkins is the Director of Public Relations and Marketing for Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina.
