In today’s social media driven world, it is easy to connect on a superficial level. With Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat among hundreds of other channels, you can amass thousands of connections with people you know very little about.

At Boys & Girls Homes, we are working with our children and families to relate in a different way. Through our RelateStrong! initiative, we have recommitted to building strong relationships between the children we serve and all of the staff on campus. This means introducing the children not only to care staff in other cottages, but also the support staff who make B&GH possible.

RelateStrong! goes beyond campus. We are redoubling our efforts to rebuild connections with family for our children as is safe and appropriate. We are also providing more and varied opportunities for our youth to participate in the community, whether through volunteering with the local food ministry or attending community events. We want every child we serve to learn how to build relationships as a skill necessary in the world today.

So while our youth may not end up with millions of followers, they will learn how to build the strong relationships that make a difference in their every day life.

Melissa Hopkins is the Director of Public Relations and Marketing for Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina.
