The Joy of Laughter

Youth kickball gameWe all know the smile that will cross your face and the joy you feel in your heart when you hear the laughter of a child.

I hope you have been able to catch some of the selfie-style videos that we have been posting recently. We decided that this is a good way to portray how things are going here on campus when we are not able to come and share this information personally.

It was a Friday afternoon, just after lunch, and a beautiful late spring day at Lake Waccamaw. As I walked through campus I came upon our residents out playing a good ole’ fashioned game of kickball. Perfect opportunity! I pulled out my phone and proceeded to set the scene in the video with the kickball game in the background. I wrapped up the video and, after enjoying the game for just a while longer, headed back to my office to review the material. As I played the video, it jumped out at me. The laughter and excited chatter of the residents as they played the game. It warmed my heart and brought a smile to my face to hear the joy of laughter. Even if for a short while, these kids were able to forget about their challenging past and the daily trauma they carry and just be a kid again. They were able to play a game, laugh out loud and have fun.

I have often shared that when you know the difficult situations our kids come from, and then you see them smiling and laughing and riding a bike or running across campus – then you know you are making a difference in their lives.

Your continued love and support makes it possible for us to create these opportunities for those in our care. By loving our children, you help us create more opportunities to hear the joy of laughter.
