The Good Doctor

The Good Doctor - Shaun's SpeechWe were at the hospital, waiting for word. President Gary Faircloth and his wife Betty had come to pray with and support one of our B&GH teen mothers while her baby was in surgery.

In that environment we got to talking about hospitals and doctors and the experience of being there. Mr. Faircloth brought up The Good Doctor. I hadn’t seen it yet. Our TV broke in the move from Texas to North Carolina and we’ve held off getting cable for our house. Funny fact, less data equals more interaction between humans.

I eventually had the opportunity to watch the first episode of The Good Doctor.  One quote stirred something within.

“The day that the rain smelled like ice cream, my bunny went to heaven in front of my eyes. The day that the copper pipes in the old building smelled like burnt food, my brother went to heaven in front of my eyes. I couldn't save them. It's sad. Neither one had the chance to become an adult. They should have become adults. They should have had children of their own and loved those children and I want to make that possible for other people.”

ABC’s The Good Doctor

It spoke to me, calling out a part of the purpose of what we do each day here at Boys and Girls Homes. We want our children at B&GH to have the chance to become adults - to have children of their own and to love those children.

We’re living to shine a light on the dark reality that there are so many -- too many -- who don’t get that chance. Their opportunity for happiness is thwarted by cruel concealment, and confined and covered up by abuse and trauma. We’re thankful for the children we can reach.

We’re thankful for the many folks who help us. For those of you who help us, thank you. For those of you who are just discovering us, help us help these children pave a past of pain into a pathway of promise.
