Effort to create memorial scholarship at B&GH for former resident

January 29, 2020

Lake Waccamaw, NC – An effort is underway to create a memorial scholarship to honor a former resident at Boys and Girls Homes.Roberto at graduation receiving a scholarship certificate.

The Roberto Diaz Rivera Memorial Scholarship fund would provide scholarship support to a student in the vocation fields of study in memory of Rivera, who tragically lost his life shortly after completing his welding certification.

“Roberto was a special part of our community,” said President Gary Faircloth. “He was a hardworking, dedicated young man who was polite and had a smile that could brighten your day.”

A part of the campus independent living program, Rivera was unusual in his dedication to his dream of becoming a welder from the day he arrived according to Program Director Ian Callahan.

“Roberto was unique in that he came to us with the dream of becoming a welder,” said Callahan. “I don’t remember another youth coming in with a dream and leaving here with that same dream having put in the work to make it happen like Roberto. He worked tirelessly during his time at B&GH in pursuit of his goal. He worked in the campus shop and began his welding certification program here. He completed that certification after leaving the Homes and was about to start a job in the field at the time of his death.”

The scholarship, once funded, will provide financial assistance to one student graduating from Thomas Academy to pursue certification in fields like welding, electrical, HVAC and facility maintenance.

“Roberto was really hands on in his learning and I think he would be smiling brightly at the opportunity to help someone else pursue their dream,” Callahan said. “Ultimately, we would like to have enough in the scholarship fund to provide a full year of educational costs in the certification program.”
