Lake Waccamaw, NC – Longtime educator DeLayne Sons was named Thomas Academy Teacher of the Year.DeLayne Sons

“This prestigious honor is a testament to your creativity, commitment, and leadership,” North Carolina Superintendent Mark Johnson wrote in a letter of congratulations. “Thank you for your service to your students and to our state.”

Sons started at Thomas Academy five years ago. A resident of Oak Island, she commutes each day with a focus on providing the best classroom experience for her students.

“Ms. Sons has been making an impact on the students from day one,” said Vice President for Education Dr. Tom Simmons. “She forms a connection with these students that helps them learn no matter what their previous educational experience.”

For Sons, the connection is just part of the classroom expectation.

“I want to see these children succeed,” said Sons. “They are like my children and I want to make sure they get the best educational opportunities.”

Sons’ official title is middle school science teacher, but she also serves as the middle school lead teacher, the Thomas Academy testing coordinator and has worked on the school improvement team.

“Ms. Sons does everything she can to provide each student what he or she needs to have a good day in the classroom,” said Dr. Geraldine Bradshaw, director at Thomas Academy. “Her personal attention and investment in each child helps with confidence and achievement in all areas of the school experience.”

It is an investment that continues after the student moves on from her classroom.

“Ms. Sons is like my school mom,” said Piper Hopkins, now a junior at Thomas Academy. “She checks in with me to make sure that I am doing what I am supposed to do. I know that if I need someone to talk to, she is there for me.”
